Snack time offers more than just fuel for your child’s learning. It is a learning tool that offers us a way to model for the children that good nutrition can be fun. Snack time also help teach the importance of forming good eating habits.

At Main Street, we would like to emphasize providing a healthy, nutritious snack for the children, as free from excess sugar, salt and additives as possible. In the Montessori style, we encourage you to have your child be a part of providing the snack from planning & shopping to delivering it to school. It will be most helpful for the snack to be ready to serve in childsized portions. Again, you will need to provide snack for 20 children. Our snack procedure is as such: You send snack on the assigned day and it will be served the next. (Teachers need to have the extra time to prepare it.) If you forget your child’s snack day, please go ahead and send one that may be used for back up.

We do have some students with special dietary restrictions. We will do our best to keep foods on hand that meet their needs. We suggest these families send a small supply of back up snacks with your child’s name on it.

A balanced snack will provide nutrition from several of the food groups. Examples of a balanced snack that are proven winners with the kids are: apples/celery with peanut butter, cheese and crackers, veggies with hummus, hard boiled eggs (cheap!) with a fruit or veggie…..The idea is to give them a protein for long term energy with a boost of vitamins and healthy carbs. Good choices from the different food groups are:

  • Dairy: yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese sticks/slices…
  • Fruit: apples, avocado, bananas, berries, melons, peaches, pears, pineapple, oranges, kiwi…
  • Vegetables: carrots, green beans, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, salsa…
  • Grains: whole grain bread/quick breads or muffins, popcorn, crackers, pretzels, corn chips…
  • Protein: eggs, chicken, turkey, nuts, nut butters, seeds, beans, cheeses, hummus…

Examples of what we ask you not to bring: Little Debbie’s Snack Cakes, cupcakes, Pop Tarts

Remember, strong bodies build strong minds!
